I bought a ThinkPad reluctantly after years of consumer laptops. It’s the most no-nonsense machine I’ve owned.
What 20 Months Looks Like
The ThinkPad X1 Carbon has been dropped twice — once from a desk onto tile, once from a car roof onto asphalt. It survived both. The keyboard mechanism still feels identical to new. The chassis has two small scuffs and one corner ding. The display is scratch-free under a screen protector applied at purchase.
What We Like
- Keyboard is the best on any laptop, Windows or Mac
- Military-spec durability that’s survived real drops
- Excellent port selection without dongles
- Battery replacement is user-accessible
What We Don’t
- Display options top out at 2.8K — MacBook Pro comparison is unfavorable
- Trackpad smaller than competitors
- Design is utilitarian to the point of bland

This machine was dropped twice and submerged briefly in a puddle. It’s still running perfectly.

The Bottom Line
The most reliable laptop we’ve owned. If durability and keyboard quality are priorities, nothing competes.
