The Owner Perspective publishes reviews written by people who own the products they’re reviewing. This page explains exactly how that works and what it means for the content you read here.
Review Standards
Every review published on this site must meet the following criteria before it is accepted for publication:
- Ownership duration: The reviewer must have owned the product for a minimum of six months. For major appliances and vehicles, we typically require 12 months or more before publication.
- Purchase proof: Reviews must be accompanied by proof of purchase or documented ownership history. We do not publish reviews of borrowed, gifted, or press-sample units.
- No manufacturer contact: Reviewers may not have accepted compensation, free products, promotional materials, or any form of consideration from the manufacturer of the reviewed product.
- Conflict disclosure: Any relationship between the reviewer and the manufacturer, retailer, or competitor must be disclosed in the review.
Scoring Methodology
Each review includes scores across five dimensions, each rated 0–10 by the reviewer:
- Reliability: How consistently has the product performed over the ownership period? Have there been failures, repairs, or warranty claims?
- Value: In hindsight, given what you paid and what you received, was it worth it?
- Build Quality: Does it feel and look like a product built to last? How has it aged?
- Usability: Is it easy and intuitive to use in daily life? Does it fit how people actually live?
- Satisfaction: Knowing what you know now, would you buy it again?
The overall score displayed on each review is the unweighted average of these five dimensions.
Verdict System
Every review concludes with one of three verdicts:
- Buy It: We recommend this product. The combination of performance, reliability, and value justifies the purchase for the typical buyer in this category.
- Worth It With Caveats: The product is good but with meaningful limitations. We explain the specific conditions under which it makes sense.
- Skip It: We do not recommend this product. We explain what we’d buy instead.
Affiliate Links
Some reviews contain affiliate links to retailers. When you click these links and make a purchase, we may earn a small commission at no additional cost to you. Affiliate relationships do not influence our review outcomes, verdict, or scores. A product we recommend earns the same commission as a product we tell you to avoid.
Updates and Corrections
Reviews are living documents. When long-term ownership changes our opinion — a product that seemed reliable at 12 months fails at 24 months, or a manufacturer releases a software update that addresses our complaints — we update the review and note the date and nature of the update.
If you believe a review contains a factual error, contact us at the address below. We take corrections seriously and publish them prominently when warranted.
What We Don’t Do
- We do not accept payment for reviews, positive or negative.
- We do not allow manufacturers to review content before publication.
- We do not remove negative reviews in response to manufacturer complaints.
- We do not publish reviews of products the reviewer does not own.
