Excellent display, serious performance, and fans that activate at a volume that announces itself in quiet rooms.

The Thermal Problem

The XPS 15 is a 15-inch laptop with desktop-class performance aspirations in an thin chassis. The result is thermal management that runs warm at idle and hot under load. Under sustained CPU workloads — video export, large file compilation, sustained gaming — the fans reach a pitch that’s distracting in any quiet environment. The bottom case regularly reaches temperatures that discourage lap use.

What We Like

  • OLED display option is reference-quality
  • Actual user-upgradeable RAM and SSD
  • Best Windows laptop keyboard available
  • USB-A ports still included

What We Don’t

  • Fans are loud under any meaningful workload
  • Bottom case gets uncomfortably warm on lap
  • Thermal throttling affects sustained performance
  • Battery lasts 5-6 hours on mixed use — not competitive
Owner’s Note

I stopped using this on my lap after two months. The heat is real, not imagined.

Owned for 14 months before this review was published.

The Bottom Line

Best Windows laptop for deskbound users who need power. Not suitable as a lap-based daily driver.
