The Math on Cheap Mowers
In the decade before this Honda, I owned four consumer mowers — two big box store brands and two “step-up” models. Average lifespan: 3.5 years. Average cost: $380. Cost over 10 years: roughly $1,520 plus 4 instances of shopping for, disposing of, and replacing a dead mower. The Honda at $950 has now been in service for 3 years with no repair costs and no signs of slowing. The math on it is already favorable.
What We Like
- Honda GCV engine has not required any repair in 3 years
- Blade engagement system is foolproof
- Cuts quality is noticeably better than residential mowers
- Resale value holds better than consumer mowers
What We Don’t
- $900+ price is genuinely hard to justify vs $350 alternatives
- Heavy — 90 lbs is real
- No self-propel option on commercial models
Three years, zero repairs, clean cuts every time. The calculus on the price is simple once you’ve owned cheap mowers.
